3 Pointers with Tim Alcorn 1.21.22

Tim Alcorn joins Ray for 3 Pointers! They talk about bench minutes, Isaac Okoro, Tim's favorite basketball player, and more.

After what was possibly the oddest season in NBA history, the Cleveland Cavaliers wrapped up their 2020-2021 campaign over the weekend. With a 22-50 record, they will be back in the NBA Draft lottery come July 29th.

Plenty of questions surround the nature of the team, from the GM down to the coaching staff, as well as the roster overall. Tim Alcorn is the Cavs' play-by-play announcer, and he joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to recap the season that was. The key term was "stride," and if indeed the young Cavaliers made progress on that front.

Alcorn, who completed his second season as the radio voice of the team, also looked at the future of Kevin Love and who would be of the Cavs' interest in the draft.

Cavs Broadcast Legend Joe Tait Has Passed

Northeast Ohio has lost another radio broadcast legend as longtime Cleveland Cavaliers radio announcer Joe Tait has passed away.

Tait first started his decades-long career with the Cavs in 1970, the team's inaugural year and continued through 1979 while concurrently announcing Indians games alongside Herb Score from 1973 through 79.

Tait moved behind the camera for the TV broadcast of the Indians from 1980 through the 87 season. Tait was there for Len Barker's perfect game in 1981 that actually happened on Tait's 44th birthday, May 15th that year.

In that time, Tait missed the Cavs 81 and 82 seasons, returning in 1983 and staying with the team until his retirement in 2011. And while he didn't get to see them win it all, but he got close, calling the Cavaliers Eastern Conference Finals win over the Detroit Pistons in 2007, that sent the team to their first NBA Finals appearance in franchise history.

That was LeBron James first trip to the NBA Finals, and over the course of his career in Cleveland, the Kid from Akron developed a personal relationship with Tait, as LeBron expressed on Twitter last night:

Ray Horner Podcasts - 6/5/2020

Part 1

:17 - Akron mayor Dan Horrigan joined the show for the second time this week to touch on the protests and allowing more opportunities for minority business owners in the city. He was also asked about reconsidering a reinstatement of summer events with the state reopening for the most part.

9:26 - With a slew of movie and entertainment news, Scott Wynn is here for you. His word of advice before heading to the drive-in: check to see if tickets are sold out, or if a high school commencement is preempting the movies.

14:23 - Gyms were another area that have been reopened the last week or so, but what steps are they going to take to ensure safety, sanitization, and social distance? Scott Crabiel is a personal training coordinator at Cleveland Clinic-Akron General at their Bath facility, and he mentioned the steps they’ve taken and how exercise is great for mental health.

20:49 - Our morning show golf pro Dan Dauk came on board, since golfers can’t wait to get out of the house and hit the links.

Part 2

:17 - With most areas of Ohio reopened, from retail to restaurants activities, amusement parks such as Cedar Point and Kings Island are still waiting on the high sign to open their gates. The morning show panel discussed the possibility of these places reopening, even at, say, 30% capacity.

11:29 - The markets have seen a nice rebound with states slowly reopening, and investors are paying attention to this and a possibility of a second wave of an outbreak due to the recent protests. Capital Financial Group’s Richard Peterson talked about the markets and investing in precious metals.

21:58 - The NBA is returning for a quick season wrap-up before the playoffs, but the Cavaliers will not be invited.

Cavs, Beilein Part Ways

As quickly as it started the John Beilein era in Cleveland is over.

Reports are that the Cleveland Cavaliers and the first-year head coach have agreed to part ways Tuesday.

It was a rough transition for first-time NBA coach Beilein who signed a five-year deal with the Cavs after twelve seasons at the University of Michigan. At the All-Star break, the Cavs are sitting at 14-40; worst in the East and the second-worst record in the NBA (behind the Warriors, 12-43).

Beilein is now just the third NBA coach in the past 30 years to be fired before making it to the end of his first year with a new team.

As of Wednesday night's practice, Associate Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff is taking over the full-time head coaching duties.

Cavs And Beilein Reportedly Close To Parting Ways

Reports around the NBA are that the Cavs and first-year head coach John Beilein could be close to parting ways.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the Cavs and Beilein have mutually discussed him stepping down.

Beilein came to the Cavs from the University of Michigan, and signed a five-year deal with the team. Cavs have won just 14 games this season; worst in the Eastern Conference and second worst in the NBA.

Ray Horner Podcast - 1/9/2020

:19 - Dr. John Green is now retired from every day activities at the University of Akron, though he’s still a part of the Bliss Institute of Applied Politics. He was gracious enough to join Ray to talk about Michael Bloomberg’s chances in the Democratic race, as well as the conflict with Iran and President Trump’s response.

8:01 - One of the more popular and polarizing comedians of the last three decades is Carlos Mencia, and he stopped by the studio to promote his weekend slew of shows at the Funny Stop Comedy Club in Cuyahoga Falls.

19:05 - News leaked that Cavs coach John Beilein called his team a bunch of “thugs,” a term that has racial connotations connected to it. Though the word is Beilein misspoke and meant to say “slugs,” the word thug has become a racial dogwhistle over the years.
