After 13 seasons, the Thad Matta era at Ohio State is officially over. Matta resigned due to chronic foot problems, though this seemed to be a mutual parting of ways with Buckeye brass.

Paul Keels, the voice of Buckeye football and basketball, told the Ray Horner Morning Show he was shocked to see Matta resign this quick. Keels says the former coach was “a dream” to cover, calling him a “world-class person.”

The OSU voice has heard from inside sources that Matta’s health may have led to a negative effect on recruiting, though he won’t rule out coaching again in the future. As far as a replacement, Keels mentioned a few names to fill the coaching shoes, and that Gene Smith and the athletic department are trying to find the right coach.

The Buckeyes will have a young team, but junior quarterback J.T. Barrett will be back under center for OSU this year, and a win over Oklahoma would not only be beneficial to him, but to the psyche of the whole team as the season goes on.

One of the newest members of the sports team at FOX Sports made an appearance  on a "Feel Good Friday" to talk about his new venture in broadcasting and discuss the NFL game today and how it differed from when he played.

Former Massillon Tiger, OSU Buckeye, and NFL linebacker and current FOX NFL and college football analyst Chris Spielman joined the Sam Bourquin Show to discuss moving on from ESPN and his time working in the booth with Sean McDonough.

"Anytime you get a chance to challenge yourself or do something new, it is exciting," Spielman said. "For me this year in 2016, I'm going to do all NFL games, and I've done some NFL preseason stuff in the past."

Chris and Sean teamed up for ESPN's college football broadcast and he says one of the cool things about working with Sean was their on-air chemistry and ability to let the broadcast "breathe." He says that their chemistry helped propel them to new heights, with Chris at FOX and Sean as the voice of Monday Night Football.

"I was a small part of him achieving a life-long goal and that felt good."

Fans from either team may not be pleased with their seatings in the lowly NIT, but all eyes in Ohio will be on the Schottenstein Center tonight. Well, at least sports fans’ eyes.

Paul Keels, the voice of the Ohio State Buckeyes, joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to preview the NIT matchup between the Buckeyes and the Akron Zips. Paul spent some time researching the Zips, saying they have a chip on their shoulders after their last-second loss to Buffalo on Saturday. The perimeter defense for the Buckeyes will have to step up, as Akron is a dangerous team from three-point land.

Keels also mentioned the interest the Buckeyes may or may not have in this game. The last time Thad Matta’s team had missed out on the NCAA Tournament was in 2008, when the Buckeyes took home the NIT title.

Buckeyes and Zips will be heard tonight on 1590 WAKR, with tipoff happening at 7 o’clock.

AUDIO "Battle of Ohio" Kickstarts NIT

Two Ohio teams will square off in the first round of the NIT Tournament Tuesday, and there might be an upset brewing down in Columbus.

The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Akron Zips will square off on the hardwood tomorrow, and the excitement level might not be at a fever pitch for Buckeye fans, but it is expected to be a solid matchup.

Blake Williams from the Buckeye Sports Bulletin joined the Sam Bourquin Show to talk about the matchup and his overall thoughts on the season.

"I don't think Ohio State fans are all that excited to be playing in the NIT Tournament for the first time in eight years," Williams said. "The NIT committee did do the team (OSU) a favor by giving them an in-state opponent which hopefully would draw a better crowd."

Akron comes into this game at 26-8 after losing to Buffalo in the MAC Championship game, and Ohio State is coming off a 20-13 season for Thad Matta's group, who some say underachieved this season.

"The expectation in Columbus is to make the NCAA Tournament, which they didn't do, so it's fair to say the season was a disappointment," Williams said.

Blake also touched on the Ohio State women's basketball team, who is looking to find out their seeding for the women's tournament. He says that despite some key injuries, the Lady Buckeyes should be in good shape for the tournament slate with their athleticism and big-game mentality.
