A North Canton man has pleaded guilty to an online fundraising fraud.
North Canton police say 41 year-old William Treacle told people he was suffering of cancer and other illnesses on the "GoFundMe" site and on social media.
The Stark County Sheriff's Office says it found Treacle forged medical documents to support his story, and says Treacle got over $10,000.
He pleaded guilty to felony theft and forgery charges, and will be sentenced later this month.
(North Canton Police Department, news release) On February 18, 2015, the North Canton Police Department received information that William E. Treacle might be defrauding the public in the form of feigning a medical condition. He was depicting himself suffering from several kinds of illnesses and cancer. He publicly solicited funds from the
public thru GoFundMe and developed a social media site identified as "Help Our Hero William Treacle."
Several victims of his scheme contributed funds in support of treatment for these suspected illnesses.
The investigation led to the inclusion of the Stark County Sheriff's Office because some of the crimes occurred outside of North Canton. After several months of working together, the investigation led to obtaining facts and records of Mr. Treacle's forging documents of confirmation of medical treatment for cancer and securing financial records relating to moneys given by the victims to him in support of his suspected treatment. Reportedly over $10,000 was given to Mr. Treacle.
Today, Mr. William E. Treacle appeared before Judge Farmer of the Stark County Common Pleas Court. He pleaded guilty to the above stated charges of felony theft and forgery through a Bill of Information. He was taken into custody and will be booked into the Stark County Jail where a booking photo will be available. He will be sentenced later in November.

The Horseshoe Casino won't be the Horseshoe next June.
Dan Gilbert's Rock Gaming will take over management of the Horseshoe in both Cleveland and Cincinnati in June 2016, ending the management deal with Caesars Entertainment. Rock Gaming will also run ThistleDown racino.
Northeast Ohio Media Group reports that the change means there will be new names for the casinos, and there will be new rewards programs that are not affiliated with Caesars Total Rewards.
Horseshoe is a Caesars brand.
The current program is linked to over 40 casinos and resorts worldwide.
It's official - Akron General Health System is now fully owned by Cleveland Clinic.
The deal was announced earlier, but Cleveland Clinic says it now owns the Akron-based system after a review by the Federal Trade Commission and the Ohio Attorney General.
Akron General first became an affiliate of the Cleveland Clinic system. The Cleveland Clinic then exercised an option to fully purchase the Akron General System.
Akron General president/COO Alan Papa says that the Clinic looks forward to being in the Akron community...
"They're looking at Akron as its own market," Papa tells WAKR.net, "We have our own ambulatory programs, and our own physicians, and I think you'll see that they will treat us really like another arm of the Clinic."
Akron General has already pointed to some benefits of the merger, including a new emergency department which will be built in the next couple of years.
Akron General's board of trustees will still have an advisory role, and officials say the merger will allow expansion of services in Summit County.

(Cleveland Clinic, news release) AKRON GENERAL HEALTH SYSTEM JOINS CLEVELAND CLINIC
Agreement includes Akron General Medical Center, Lodi Community Hospital, Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute, Wellness Centers, the Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center, Partners Physician Group and Visiting Nurse Service and Affiliates
Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, Cleveland: Today, Akron General Health System officially became fully part of Cleveland Clinic, following the review of the Ohio Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission.
As part of the agreement, the entire Akron General Health System – including Akron General Medical Center, Lodi Community Hospital, the Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute, three Health & Wellness centers, the Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center, Partners Physician Group (PPG), and Visiting Nurse Service and Affiliates – will join Cleveland Clinic.
"This is a momentous day for healthcare in Ohio," said Toby Cosgrove, M.D., President and CEO of Cleveland Clinic. "We are pleased to welcome Akron General into our health system and we look forward to developing and expanding services and enhancing access for patients throughout Northeast Ohio."
Now that Akron General is part of Cleveland Clinic, some of the immediate upcoming initiatives include integration planning, as well as:
Breaking ground for the new emergency department on Nov. 20, 2015. Construction will begin on the facility in the first quarter of 2016;
Opening a new outpatient facility in Portage County in the first quarter of 2016 and another in Lodi in 2016;
Replacement of Akron General's electronic medical record system to Epic, in order to enhance safety, quality, patient experience and reduce the overall cost of care. This will allow providers to have complete information for patients receiving care anywhere throughout the newly expanded system.
"This is an exciting time not only for our two health systems, but for the citizens in Summit and surrounding counties, who will benefit from improved access to high-quality, affordable healthcare services," noted Thomas L. "Tim" Stover, M.D., MBA, President and CEO, Akron General Health System. "Because both share the same goal of providing the absolute best patient experience, the joining of our systems was the next logical progression for Akron General. We are very excited about becoming Cleveland Clinic caregivers and look forward to expanding our services and improving our healthcare model so that we can provide even better care to our patients."
In order to maintain important local input, the Akron General Health System's board of trustees will remain in place as an advisory board going forward.
The affiliate relationship and continuous collaboration between Akron General and Cleveland Clinic has produced 17 work teams that have been collaborating on a number of initiatives resulting in clinical improvements, cost savings, and the sharing of best practices. Several mutually advantageous projects have commenced as well, and include:
The development of a new state-of-the-art emergency department at Akron General, which is expected to open in Fall 2017.
Cleveland Clinic cardiothoracic surgeon Joseph Lahorra, M.D., was the first Cleveland Clinic physician to begin practicing at Akron General as part of the affiliation in 2015. Dr. Lahorra sees patients as part of the comprehensive team at the Akron General Heart & Vascular Center.
Cleveland Clinic now provides ground and air transportation for critical care and trauma services for Akron General.
Patients in need of a kidney – and soon liver – transplantations are now able to see Cleveland Clinic physicians conveniently at Akron General and receive their pre-surgery and follow-up care after surgery in Akron.
Akron General was able to create two new infusion centers, one at the Akron General Health and Wellness Center – West, and the other at the Akron General Health & Wellness Center – North. These new infusion centers offer chemotherapy and other infusion services, such as rheumatology infusions. Another infusion center is set to open at the Akron General Health & Wellness Center – Green, by the end of 2015.
Akron General has seen a significant cost savings when it joined Cleveland Clinic's group purchasing organization, Excelerate. To date, Akron General has achieved an estimated $1.3M in savings with additional millions in savings expected.
Akron General is able to purchase new medical equipment that will link to a patient's electronic medical record, including monitors, ventilators, TV system, nurse call systems, and "smart" IV pumps. In addition, Akron General was able to add new nursery isolettes.
In addition to Cleveland Clinic's main campus, the Cleveland Clinic health system includes eight regional hospitals, more than 90 Northern Ohio outpatient locations – including 16 full-service family health centers – Cleveland Clinic Florida, the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, Cleveland Clinic Canada, and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.
It's not easy for a business to simply pop-up on the streets of Akron, but that's exactly what one dry cleaning shop did with the help of Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP).
"A lot of people say that people don't wear suits and they don't get dressed up as much anymore, but there is one place they are getting dressed up and it's downtown Akron," said Blaise Meeker, co-owner of Pressed For Success.
DAP launched a program this year to help businesses fill empty storefronts in downtown Akron. That program helped Pressed for Success to open on South Main Street, accross from Lock 3. DAP is assisting the owners with a six-month lease of an empty storefront on Main Street.
"We're always looking for ways to activate downtown and bring more businesses into downtown, so we received a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to activate storefronts," said Kimberly Beckett with DAP. "So find ways to bring more retail business into downtown Akron."
Pressed for Success co-owners Blaise and Colin Meeker didn't hesitate to take advantage of the opportunity.
"We hope that they've given us a strong foundation to build off of and last for the next 20 years," said Colin Meeker, co-owner of Pressed for Success.
The store opens Monday, Nov. 2. The owners plan to open another pop-up store that will feature items from Akron-area artists and designers.
A woman is dead after walking too close to a moving Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train in Peninsula Sunday afternoon. Witnesses say she was seated at the Winking Lizard Tavern saw a tussle between an adult and a child acroiss the tracks in front of the Century Bike Shop. The railroad tracks don't have barriers in the stretch and most pedestrians follow the trail or parking lot on either side of the railroad right-of-way in the popular tourist destination.
The National Park Service's Mary Pat Doorley told NewsChannel 5 other visitors to the park were giving the woman alerts as she was heading back to the restaurant to stop because of the train, which was moving at between 10-15 miles per hour but the woman didn't heed the train's horn or the warnings and was struck and killed.
There were about 300 passengers aboard the train, which was held at the Peninusla depot for about four hours after the incident. Police are referring to the case as an accident.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is looking into a Stark County crash involving a police cruiser, where two officers were injured.
It happened at just before 7:30 PM Friday night on State Route 44 in Marlboro Township.
The patrol says 32 year-old Marlboro Township police officer Christoper Kenneally was trying to make a traffic stop, when another car driving northbound on Route 44 went left of center.
Kenneally tried to avoid the car, and the patrol car ended up going off the right side of the road, striking a utility pole.

The man charged with stabbing a man to death outside Chapel Hill Mall in August made his first court appearance in Summit County on Friday.
Deandre Baskerville was arraigned Friday morning in the court of Summit County Common Pleas Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands.
Baskerville was arrested on a bus in West Virginia in September and brought back to Akron, and is still being held on one-million dollars' bond.
Police say Baskerville was fighting with the victim, 35 year-old Terrance Rogers.
Rogers went into the mall after being stabbed, and collapsed near the "Finish Line" athletic shoe store.
Baskerville has his first pre-trial hearing on November 18th.
"Boo at the Zoo" this year set more attendance records at the Akron Zoo - both for the event itself, and all-time.
The Zoo says over 6,800 people showed up for "Boo at the Zoon" last Sunday (October 25th), which set an all-time single day attendance record for the zoo.
The 6 days of "Boo" brought in over 26,000 visitors this year, also a record.
The Zoo says one reason for the attendance spike - expanded hours from 11:30 AM to 7:30 PM on weekends for "Boo at the Zoo" this year.
----
(Akron Zoo, news release) For the second year in a row the Akron Zoo has shattered two records during Boo at the Zoo.
The zoo broke its all-time single day attendance record with 6,831 visitors on Sunday, October 25th. The zoo also set a new Boo at the Zoo record with 26,220 people visiting during the 6-day event.
The previous two records were set during last year's Boo at the Zoo. Single day attendance was 6,658 on Saturday, October 2014 during the event and total attendance for Boo at the Zoo 2014 was 25,544.
Expanded hours for the event are believed to be the reason for the spike in attendance during Boo at the Zoo. Last year the zoo expanded their hours and Boo at the Zoo ran all day from 11:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays instead of shortened afternoon and evening hours as in previous years.
This year's Boo at the Zoo ran October 10-11, 17-18 and 24-25. The event is one of the area's largest trick-or-treating events. It includes 12 themed treat stations that kids can trick-or-treat at while enjoying non-scary Halloween decorations and the zoo's 700 animals. The zoo passed out 122,088 treats to the kids during the event. The event is presented by Acme Fresh Markets.
Democratic mayoral nominee Dan Horrigan says his campaign is still working hard, despite the success of other Democrats in the past.
"You always work hard. You don't take anything for granted. Nobody gives you anything, " Horrigan tells WAKR.net. "You've gotta go out and earn it, and that's one of the great characteristics of the city...we've earned every everything that we've had. Nobody gives us anything."
Horrigan faces challenges from Republican Eddie Sipplen and Independent Bill Melver. The city of Akron historically leans heavily Democratic, and has had a Democratic mayor leading the city for the past 30 years.
There are more than 20,000 registered Democrats in Akron, compared to more than 2,800 that identify themselves as Republican, according to the Summit County Board of Elections data. There are over 99,000 voters who identify as independent.
Horrigan says his campaign's efforts on the ground proved to be an important tool, saying candidates have to understand the voters' needs and concerns. "This campaign has always been about issues," Horrigan says. "And it's about the voters. It's not about me, and it's not about the other opponent. It's about what they (voters) care about. Because that's what elections are for."
Akron will elect a new mayor for the first time in nearly 30 years next Tuesday. Early voting through the weekend hours at the Summit County Board of Elections, 500 Grant Street, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday; 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday and 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday. Precincts will be open the usual times for in-person voting on Tuesday.
Sobriety checkpoints are nothing new in Summit County, but the timing of the next one is interesting.
The Summit County OVI Task Force says it'll be out on Saturday night - which is Halloween night.
Lt. Joe Davis with the Task Force says the kids out, and drunk drivers, could be tragic...with the children preoccupied with trick or treating.
"They may not think to look both ways, to go out and start on the roadway. And if you're impaired, your reaction times and your ability to operate your motor vehicle is just not there," Lt. Davis tells WAKR.net. "It could just be the perfect formula for tragedy."
Lt. Davis says many communities will stick with the traditional October 31st date for "beggar's night", so there'll be a lot of kids looking for treats.
And he says their parents risk becoming victims to impared drivers, who don't arrange for a designated driver or stay away from the steering wheel.
The Summit County OVI Task Force doesn't publicize checkpoint locations in advance, though Lt. Davis says word spreads fast enough by social media.
