AUDIO NFL Prospect Breakdown: Wentz & Cook

The Browns are in a position to draft a top-notch quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft, and there are a couple of guys on the team's radar.

Longtime Walsh Jesuit head football coach Gerry Rardin (now retired) spokewith Brad about the exlpoits of former Warrior signal caller and Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook  and how his resilency and mental fortitude will serve him well moving forward to the NFL.

"He just worked on every possible area of his game," said Rardin. "His best trait is that he never let the last play bother him."

During his career at Michigan State, he bested current Washington Redskins' quarterback Kirk Cousins' mark for most wins by a QB in Spartan history.

The other big name that people have been talking about is former North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz, whose stock rose after a solid week of practice at the Senior Bowl.

Ron Wingenback, the head coach of Century High School in North Dakota also joined Brad to talk about his former quarterback and what he brings to the football field.

"Carson's a very good learner," Ron said. "He wanted to know everything he needed to know about the opponent, and that made him a very good quarterback in high school and in college."

The NFL Draft is getting closer and closer and the Browns are looking at various prospects, including quarterbacks to lead the team out of the dumps.

Neal Driscoll from Phinmaniacs.com joined Brad Russell in the Average Sports Show to talk about the quarterback position, and what Cal's Jared Goff and North Dakota State's Carson Wentz bring to the table.

Driscoll says that Carson Wentz would be a good fit for the Browns in the rough-and-tumble AFC North.

"He's bigger (than Goff), he's mobile, he's got a cannon for an arm, and I think if you put a good offensive line in front of him, he'll be solid."

Wentz came from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS or I-AA) which has some teams thinking the level of competition wasn't as good, but Driscoll thinks he can succeed at the NFL level.

"They're getting a good guy, and I don't see how the Browns don't take a quarterback at #2."

AUDIO Brent Sobleski Talks Manning, NFL

In the NFL, there is no offseason, and one of the NFL's biggest names is in the news.

Peyton Manning, two-time Super Bowl winner and Denver Bronocs quarterback was accused of sexual assault by a former trainer while playing at the University of Tennessee in the late 1990's.

Sobleski explains his stance on the issue, saying that nothing being reported here is new.

"We have one writer who basically stumbled upon this case for the first time in his life, and reported it from a first person perspective and it really wasn't," Sobleski said.

Manning has denied any wrongdoing in the matter. The university has been recently named in a Title IX lawsuit regarding sexual assault cases.

Brent also touched on NFL free agency, saying that there's some things the Browns need to look at including Alex Mack possibly bolting or addressing wide reciever in free agency.

"One of the guys you might look at is Bengals WR Marvin Jones," Hue (Jackson) likes him, and he would be a good #2 opposite Josh Gordon," he explained.

The NFL Playoffs have moved to the divisional round and looking to get one step closer to the championship game.

Sean Tomlinson, an NFL writer for the Bleacher Report joined the Sam Bourquin Show on a "Feel Good Friday" to break down the games as well as discuss other headlines in the National Football League, including the Rams' move from St. Louis to Los Angeles.

Starting with the Saturday games, Tomlinson says the Kansas City/New England matchup on Saturday is not a good matchup for the Patriots, considering their offensive line problems coupled with the Kansas City defense.

"Justin Houston (KC Defensive End) is a scary man coming off the edge," Sean explained. "It helps New England has some pieces back, but it'll be the proverbial nailbiter."

Sean says the Green Bay/Arizona game should work in favor of the Cardinals, who terrorized Aaron Rodgers in the regular season with multiple sacks.

For the Panthers and Seahawks Sunday, along with the Steelers and Broncos, Tomlinson said both matchups will be exciting.

"You can never underestimate (Steelers quarterback) Ben Roethlisberger's ability to come back from injuries and lead an injured team," he said.

January has been a  crazy time in the NFL, with the Rams moving to L.A, and the possibility of the San Diego Chargers moving to La-La Land as well.

"I highly doubt San Diego will stay put, Tomlinson said.

"This feels completely different," says Sobleski. "This isn't the same old Browns, this is going out there and selling your vision, and not settling."

AUDIO Brad and Brent Talk Analytics, Browns

With all the news going on with the Cleveland Browns, there's many different schools of thought on the analytics and the sad state of affairs up in Berea.

Brent Sobleski from the Bleacher Report joined the Average Sports Show on Wednesday to talk about Sashi Brown and Paul DePodesta being hired by Jimmy Haslam to try and get this thing turned around.

"These hires were so far out of the box, it even caught me off guard," Sobleski said.

"My issue is the context of these hires and we don't know what exactly their roles will be."

The Browns finished #32 out of 32 teams at the end of the regular season power rankings put together by Brent and the folks at Bleacher Report.

The coaching search is also a hot topic of discussion and Brent seems to believe that the new head coach needs to not be a "yes" man for Jimmy Haslam and buy into the philosophy and believe in the current structure.

AUDIO Russell,Sobleski Talk NFL Power Rankings

With his latest edition of the NFL Power Rankings on Bleacher Report, it's no surprise that out of 32 NFL teams, the Cleveland Browns came in 32nd. The situation is a mess and it seems as though there's no light at the end of the tunnel.

Brent Sobleski from the Bleacher Report joined Brad Russell in the Average Sports Show Wednesday to talk about the rankings and the frustrations surrounding the Browns, especially their lack of finding quality talent in the first round of the draft.

"The issues with the rookies are almost identical,  when you are talking technique and lack of functional football strength," Sobleski said, referring to Danny Shelton and Cameron Erving

For the rest of the AFC,  Brent says the Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers are propelling themselves into playoff contention, despite injuries to key players.

With the Browns in the bye week after the loss to the Steelers, the team already knows who will be behind center when they finish the season.

The 2 and 8 Browns have tapped quarterback Johnny Manziel to play the last six games of the 2015 season.

The move came just before the NFL announced that it won't discipline Manziel for an October incident with his girlfriend in Avon.

Head coach Mike Pettine says that not only has Manziel's play improved through the loss to the Steelers.

"We understand where our season is at this point," Pettine told reporters in Berea on Tuesday, "and this is a kid that we've invested a lot in...and this will give us an opportunity to see how far he's come, and what he's capable of."

Manziel says he's excited to start, and says he's told coach Pettine that he'll be on his best behavior.

"I let him now that I'm not going to do anything that's going to be a distraction to this team, or be an embarrassment to the organization," Manziel says, "and that was the thing that he stressed to me as well, so he kind of stressed that back."

The Browns play next a week from Monday night at FirstEnergy Stadium against the Baltimore Ravens.
