Norton senior Bret Baker is the male 1590 WAKR student athlete of the week for November 10-17.
Bret is a star on the wrestling mats for the Panthers, and he will be moving up from the 138 weight class to 145 for his senior season.
From a young age, Bret has been involved in wrestling, having done so for twelve years.
"My dad got me into [wrestling], and I stuck with it ever since,” he says. "It [takes] a lot of mental toughness.”
In his junior year, Bret finished seventh in the state in Division II and was named team MVP for the Panthers
Though he is putting the finishing touches on his senior year at Norton, Bret spends very little time at the high school. He isn’t playing hooky, mind you; Bret spends most of his school days taking college prep classes at Stark State College.
When he is not wrestling, Bret can be seen in the grass somewhere, either on a baseball field or a golf course. In his free time, he enjoys unwinding on his Xbox.
After graduation, Bret is looking to further his education at either Akron or Kent State. The field of medicine runs in the Baker family, and Bret seems to have caught the medical bug, as he looks to major in NEOMED.
“I may wrestle,” he says at the next level. “But I’m definitely focusing on academics."
