Barberton senior quarterback Zane Ries is the male Student Athlete of the Week during the week of October 13th-20th.
As of this writing and recording, Barberton undefeated at 7-0, and Zane is a big reason for the Magics’ success. In his junior year of 2016, Zane received First Team All-Suburban League honors, as well as First Team All-District, and an honorable mention All-State team.
"I feel like we're getting better each week,” says Zane about his football team. "Us seniors are keeping everybody focused week to week, one game at a time.”
Being a senior, Zane wants to lead by example for the underclassmen. How does he do that? “Show them the right way, help them if they need anything, show them the ropes and how to act in public, and how to handle adversity."
When he’s not on the gridiron, Zane is a member of the basketball team, where he was also First Team All-Suburban League.
A Barberton lifer, Zane is active in the community. He has volunteered at the town’s annual Mum Fest, has ranked leaves for the elderly, and is a part of the school’s anti-bullying program.
"It's amazing,” he talks of living in Barberton and attending their schools. "The family aspect, all the support, and the tradition. A lot of schools I don't think have that tradition."
Zane is still undecided on where he wants to attend college, but has had offers from schools across Ohio. He does plan on playing football at the next level, and wants to major in Education.
