This week, our 1590 WAKR Student Athlete of the Week is Javann Rogers, a sophomore basketball player from Buchtel High School.
Rogers says she's excited for the season to start and make things happen on the hardwood.
“We're hoping to make it farther than the city, we want to go to state,” she says. “We're advancing (on the court) because we have a young team this year.”
The Lady Griffins were City Series Champions last season and lost to Marlington in the second round two years in a row.
Javann is an honors student at Buchtel, and she knows the balance between school and sports is necessary. Last year in addition to her work in the classroom being on both the honor roll and merit roll, she was 2nd team All-City last season.
She is a two-sport athlete playing both basketball and softball, but basketball is truly a family affair, as her older siblings played and her mother coached as well.
Off the court, Javann shares her love of the game coaching as a volunteer basketball coach for Ladies First in Akron, for whom she used to play in her younger days.
She says her teammates now with the Lady Griffs have been known to share a good practical joke or two during their time on the court.
“There's times we're serious, there's times we play, but we know to get back serious and work hard,” she explained.
We here at 1590 WAKR wish Javann the best in all of her future endeavors.
