Highland senior Ashley Mennenga is the female 1590 WAKR Student Athlete of the Week for November 24-December 1.
Ashley is beginning her senior season as a star swimmer for the Hornets, though her time in the pool will be pushed back. An overuse injury to her right arm will keep her out of the water for a bit, but she plans to be back to her old form.
That form was ever present as an underclassman. Ashley is a two-time Suburban League MVP, first-team All-Gazette, four-time All-Ohio, USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, among other accolades.
"I’ve been swimming competitively since eight grade,” says Ashley, evidently a quick learner, though she took swim lessons many years before that. As for the her fellow Hornets, she says “I’ve been really fortunate to have great coaches and teammates."
When she’s not in the pool, Ashley is very active at Highland High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society, an office aid, and a mentor to sixth graders. She also volunteers at her church and helps those with special needs.
After high school, Ashley will attend the University of Cincinnati, with physical therapy being her preferred major. She plans on swimming for the Bearcats.
"I’ve been really fortunate to have great physical therapists who have been really great to get me going, so I wanted to make that difference in an athlete’s life.”
