Akron Police are reporting troubling overdose statistics in the city for the first part of the year.

According to News 5, the department is reporting that between January 1st and April 30th this year, there were 60 deadly drug overdose deaths in Akron, compared to 25 over the same time span last year. That's an increase of 140-percent.

Health officials say that part of the reason for this is less people seeking treatment. Leaders of the Oriana House Akron tell News 5 that the number of people coming to them for detox has been down between 30 and 40 percent since the onset of the pandemic.

Police add that people either knowingly or unknowingly mixing drugs is contributing to the spike in overdose deaths as well.
