A US Senate Committee heard from a wide variety of officials including the head of the National Transportation Safety Board, Ohio Governor, Mike DeWine, and US Senator, Sherrod Brown yesterday, in response to the recent train derailment and toxic chemical spill in East Palestine.

NTSB Chair, Jennifer Hamendy, said "The bottom line is there are no accidents. This derailment, as all accidents we investigate, was 100% preventable."

Ohio Governor, Mike DeWine, called for strong and quick action" on railroad safety, saying "No other community should ever have to go through this. And so, there must be a great sense of urgency to make our railways safer."

Norfolk Southern Railways CEO, Alan Shaw, repeatedly apologized for the derailment, though he refrained from taking responsibility for it, and from supporting proposed legislation that would require at least two crew members on all trains.
