Citizens of Akron woke up Thursday morning to some sad news, as long-time Ward 1 councilman Rich Swirsky lost his battle with leukemia. He was 68 years old.

Akron mayor Dan Horrigan joined the Ray Horner Morning Show for his usual Thursday radio visit, and he said Rich was a "true champion" in the city. He says Swirsky was very passionate about his duties in his ward, and that a city like Akron needs more people in public service who shared his passion. The mayor also touched on the police auditor position as far as enforcement goes, as well as the new corridor for Akron Children's Hospital and the future of the Chapel Hill Mall area.

Bases & Balls is powered by Jennings Heating & Cooling.

Memorial Day is approaching, and unlike 2020, the 2021 holiday will have plenty more cookouts and pool parties due to COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths trending down.

Dr. Thomas File is a doctor of infectious diseases at Summa Health, and he joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to talk more about how well the vaccines are working not just with the original virus, but fighting off the variants, as well. He also assured skeptical parents about the safety of the vaccines for children, as the goal has been to get as many kids innoculated before the fall school year as possible.

Akron Police are investigating the murder of an as yet unidentified 28 year old man who was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the backyard of a home in the 22 hundred block of 24th Street SW last night (Monday, May 24).

It is the 23rd homicide in Akron this year, and police are asking for tips to help them find out who did it.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490 or 330-375-2Tip. You can also call Summit County Crimestoppers: 330-434-COPS, or Text TIPSCO with your tips to 2746.

Hey Bobby! - 5/26/2021

Written by
Time now for Hey Bobby!, a weekly Cleveland Indians segment with VP Bob DiBiasio and WAKR's Ray Horner.

Bobby and Ray chatted about the origins of Jacobs/Progressive Field, which dated back to a syntax in 1984, culminating in its debut a full decade later as a part of the Gateway Project. Bobby also talked about the renovations the ballpark went through prior to the 2015 season, as well as the best trades in club history.

Hey Bobby! is powered by NECA-IBEW.

The origins of COVID-19 have been under dispute since the very beginning of the pandemic. There were theories the virus was leaked from a lab in Wuhan, but many experts surmised it could have come from China’s wet markets.

Now, nearly 15 months after the pandemic was declared, the origin story is back in the spotlight. Dr. Hazel Barton is a microbiologist at the University of Akron, and she joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to talk about those beginnings, as well as how well the vaccines are working. Dr. Barton still believes this is an animal virus that was being worked on inside the lab, and that a virus of this magnitude could not have been created without the "genetic barcode" of the wild.

Now that mask mandates and other health orders are being dropped, as well as more people being vaccinated, more Americans are reaching into their wallets for their credit or debit cards. But with inflation on the rise, some of those desired items and vacations may be put on the credit card, and that can have some issues to tend to down the road.

Robert Dodaro is with Prism Wealth Management, and he joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to educate the listeners on the importance of the credit score. He also talked about the difference in credit cards today, which are being used in different capacities, on top of gaining points per use.

Dodaro also hosts Financial Focus, which can be heard Saturday and Sunday mornings on WAKR.

Tim Alcorn Recaps Cavaliers 2020-2021 Season

Written by
After what was possibly the oddest season in NBA history, the Cleveland Cavaliers wrapped up their 2020-2021 campaign over the weekend. With a 22-50 record, they will be back in the NBA Draft lottery come July 29th.

Plenty of questions surround the nature of the team, from the GM down to the coaching staff, as well as the roster overall. Tim Alcorn is the Cavs' play-by-play announcer, and he joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to recap the season that was. The key term was "stride," and if indeed the young Cavaliers made progress on that front.

Alcorn, who completed his second season as the radio voice of the team, also looked at the future of Kevin Love and who would be of the Cavs' interest in the draft.
