Who Shot Two Women On Gridley Avenue?

Written by

Three guys spraying bullets outside a home, two women injured, and nobody knows who did it.

Yet.

That's the word from Akron Police, who say three men jumped out of a vehicle that had been driving southbound in the 500 block of Gridley Avenue in Akron's Middlebury neighborhood, at about 3:48PM Monday afternoon, and opened fire.

A 65 year old woman standing on her front porch got hit in the shoulder, and a woman standing outside the house got shot in the hand. Both ended up at the hospital with non-life-threatening wounds, but so far; police say they have no idea who did it.

What they do have; is more than 40 shell casings, and at least three bullet-riddled homes and vehicles to show for it.

Anyone with information that can help police track down the shooters, should call the Akron Police Detective Bureau, at 330-375-2490, or 330-375-2Tip.

A chemical spill at the University of Akron yesterday that led to an evacuation and one student being taken to the hospital as a precaution.

A university spokesperson tells 19 News that it happened in a lab inside the Knight Chemical Building when a student dropped a bottle containing 1,3 Diaminopropane that splashed onto the students pants. 1,3 Diaminopropane is a  flammable industrial compound that is toxic to the skin.

The student was immediately placed in the chemical shower and the Akron Fire department was called. The lab and adjacent buildings were evacuated and the student was transported to Akron General as a precaution.  The buildings have since been reopened but the lab remains closed while the spilt chemicals are cleaned up.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to invest $7.8 billion dollars by the end of 2029,  to expand data center operations in Central Ohio, which, according to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, is the second-largest single private sector company investment in Ohio history.

The new data centers will contain computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment, and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing.

Exactly where they will be located has not yet been determined, and DeWine says numerous locations are under consideration.

DeWine notes that Amazon is already one of the largest private-sector employers in the state, and that the company's continued growth "further cements Ohio as the heart of our nation's technology and innovation".

AWS launched its first data centers in the Midwest in 2016, and currently operates data center campuses in Franklin and Licking counties.

According to JP Nauseef, President and CEO of JobsOhio, this new investment will create 230 direct jobs, and an estimated 1,000 support jobs.

Tallmadge Police say the 42 year old suspect upon whom two of their officers openend fire last Thursday, June 22, now faces additional charges.

Tallmadge Police Chief, Ronald Williams, says Larry Beal, who is now in custody for Aggravated Arson, will be additionally charged with two counts of felonious assault on an officer, weapon under disability, and failure to comply with an officer.

Those charges relate to the night Beal was arrested, when police say they responded to a report that there was a person with outstanding warrants present in the 1100 Block of Woods Drive. When they arrived, police say, Beal fled and led them on a pursuit which ended in Stark County. Then, they allege he pointed a gun at them, and two officers shot at him, resulting in what police describe as "minor" injuries.

But it wasn't until after they called in a SWAT team, that officers could finally arrest him, as he had barricaded himself inside a truck.

After that, police say they took him to the hospital for treatment of "minor" injuries he sustained in the shooting, and was then booked into the Summit County Jail for Aggravated Arson.  Willaims says the the new charges will be filed against him today.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations, meanwhile, is investigating the actions of the officers who shot at Beal, and they have been placed on administrative leave.

Police in North Olmsted are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that occurred at a Giant Eagle grocery store Sunday morning.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports that police were called to the store located at 27264 Lorain Road around 9:30 am, with the authorities saying that 60-year-old Bernard Smith fatally shot his ex-wife, 63-year-old Susan Peterson while she was working at the store. When officers arrived they found both Smith and Peterson dead from gunshot wounds. The two had been divorced since 2004 and Peterson had been an employee at that Giant Eagle for almost 4 years.

About 200 customers and 67 employees were at the store at the time of the shooting with North Olmsted Police Chief Bob Wagner saying that, "We're very, very fortunate that no one else was hurt or injured.”

Jeff Gilbert, CBS's Auto Industry Analist, joined the Ray Horner Morning Show Monday. Ford and GM are partnering with Tesla to ensure that all makes have availability to charging stations. Jeff talks about how the companies are working to develop a charging network.
