Few communities have as rich a sports culture as Barberton. Now, there is an opening with some large shoes to fill.

On Wednesday, Ken Rector, the long-time head coach of the Magics, announced his retirement from coaching the basketball team. Ken called into the Ray Horner Morning Show to discuss his decision and what he has going forward.

Ken says he put a lot of thought into his decision to step aside and, with his kids in college, he felt this was the right time to leave. He wanted to make sure the program is where he wanted it to be and ensure the Magics’ tradition continues.

Does Ken have another coaching job lined up? "I’ve never even looked at any other positions,” he says.

Ken grew up in Barberton, and getting the head coaching job some 20 years ago was “a dream.” However, he plans to continue teaching at Barberton.
