For much of the last year, Akron mayor Dan Horrigan joined the Ray Horner Morning Show every Thursday to discuss everything related to COVID-19, from the virus itself to the response and the impact on the community. But after the conviction of Derek Chauvin this week, the conversation began with police reform in the city.

Horrigan says Akron has been out in front of not only improving policing, but community relations, and has promoted their accountability and transparency with the use of body cameras. Though face-to-face conversations in the community has been difficult during the pandemic, he says the police have still tried to stay active and help build up trust throughout the neighborhoods.

The mayor also touched on how the city will spend their COVID relief funds, as well as the “speed plates” that have popped up on the streets.
