Highland Grad, Former Buckeye Dead at 34

Former Ohio State defensive end and 2002 Highland High School graduate Mike Kudla, 34, has passed away according to a the Highland Local School District.

Kudla ranks 14th on the all-time sack leaders list for Ohio State and was a member of the 2002 National Champion team. Kudla was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2006.

While his NFL career was cut short by injuries, Kudla remained active in sports medicine, working with the NFL on CTE-protocols.

No cause of death has been released.

The following is the notification posted to the Highland High School Facebook page:

Dear Highland Parents and Friends,

We were informed this morning that Mike Kudla passed away unexpectedly yesterday, Sunday, July 15. He was 34.

Mike was a proud 2002 graduate of Highland High School. An honor student and four-year letter winner, he left Highland with over 500 career tackles and was named to several All-America teams. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University and a member of the 2002 National Championship Team under Coach Jim Tressel, a two-time Big Ten Champion, First Team All-Big Ten, and 2005 Team Defensive MVP. Mike capped off his Ohio State career with a three-sack performance in a win over Notre Dame and ranks 14th in Ohio State history for career sacks.

After his career in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mike embraced his entrepreneurial spirit and began a career in insurance and risk management. After several years, the opportunity arose to join The Ohio State University and, in 2012, Mike was named Managing Director of Development for the Fisher College of Business. Most recently, he was the owner of Core Plex, where he developed and built medical facilities all over the country. He was also working with the NFL on protocols for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), which is a neurodegenerative disease found in people who have experienced multiple head injuries.

Despite his success on and off the football field, Mike remained humble and was extremely generous with his time and resources. He was always willing to share his experience and mentor youth. He was loved and respected by many and will be missed terribly.

The Kudla's have been long-time members of the Highland community. His mother, Mary Fran, worked at Highland Schools for 20 years, retiring in July 2017, and remains the director of the Highland Community Education program.

Mary Fran and her husband, Paul, reside in Montville Township and have four other children, Brian ('98), Katie ('00), Eric ('05, also employed at Highland Schools) and Emily ('09).

Most of us cannot begin to imagine the depth of grief that their family is going through right now. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Funeral arrangements are pending. We will keep you informed as more information becomes available.

Thank you,
Dawn Marzano
Director of Communications
Highland Local School District

AUDIO NFL Prospect Breakdown: Wentz & Cook

The Browns are in a position to draft a top-notch quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft, and there are a couple of guys on the team's radar.

Longtime Walsh Jesuit head football coach Gerry Rardin (now retired) spokewith Brad about the exlpoits of former Warrior signal caller and Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook  and how his resilency and mental fortitude will serve him well moving forward to the NFL.

"He just worked on every possible area of his game," said Rardin. "His best trait is that he never let the last play bother him."

During his career at Michigan State, he bested current Washington Redskins' quarterback Kirk Cousins' mark for most wins by a QB in Spartan history.

The other big name that people have been talking about is former North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz, whose stock rose after a solid week of practice at the Senior Bowl.

Ron Wingenback, the head coach of Century High School in North Dakota also joined Brad to talk about his former quarterback and what he brings to the football field.

"Carson's a very good learner," Ron said. "He wanted to know everything he needed to know about the opponent, and that made him a very good quarterback in high school and in college."

The NFL Draft is getting closer and closer and the Browns are looking at various prospects, including quarterbacks to lead the team out of the dumps.

Neal Driscoll from Phinmaniacs.com joined Brad Russell in the Average Sports Show to talk about the quarterback position, and what Cal's Jared Goff and North Dakota State's Carson Wentz bring to the table.

Driscoll says that Carson Wentz would be a good fit for the Browns in the rough-and-tumble AFC North.

"He's bigger (than Goff), he's mobile, he's got a cannon for an arm, and I think if you put a good offensive line in front of him, he'll be solid."

Wentz came from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS or I-AA) which has some teams thinking the level of competition wasn't as good, but Driscoll thinks he can succeed at the NFL level.

"They're getting a good guy, and I don't see how the Browns don't take a quarterback at #2."

AUDIO Brent Sobleski Talks Manning, NFL

In the NFL, there is no offseason, and one of the NFL's biggest names is in the news.

Peyton Manning, two-time Super Bowl winner and Denver Bronocs quarterback was accused of sexual assault by a former trainer while playing at the University of Tennessee in the late 1990's.

Sobleski explains his stance on the issue, saying that nothing being reported here is new.

"We have one writer who basically stumbled upon this case for the first time in his life, and reported it from a first person perspective and it really wasn't," Sobleski said.

Manning has denied any wrongdoing in the matter. The university has been recently named in a Title IX lawsuit regarding sexual assault cases.

Brent also touched on NFL free agency, saying that there's some things the Browns need to look at including Alex Mack possibly bolting or addressing wide reciever in free agency.

"One of the guys you might look at is Bengals WR Marvin Jones," Hue (Jackson) likes him, and he would be a good #2 opposite Josh Gordon," he explained.

The NFL Playoffs have moved to the divisional round and looking to get one step closer to the championship game.

Sean Tomlinson, an NFL writer for the Bleacher Report joined the Sam Bourquin Show on a "Feel Good Friday" to break down the games as well as discuss other headlines in the National Football League, including the Rams' move from St. Louis to Los Angeles.

Starting with the Saturday games, Tomlinson says the Kansas City/New England matchup on Saturday is not a good matchup for the Patriots, considering their offensive line problems coupled with the Kansas City defense.

"Justin Houston (KC Defensive End) is a scary man coming off the edge," Sean explained. "It helps New England has some pieces back, but it'll be the proverbial nailbiter."

Sean says the Green Bay/Arizona game should work in favor of the Cardinals, who terrorized Aaron Rodgers in the regular season with multiple sacks.

For the Panthers and Seahawks Sunday, along with the Steelers and Broncos, Tomlinson said both matchups will be exciting.

"You can never underestimate (Steelers quarterback) Ben Roethlisberger's ability to come back from injuries and lead an injured team," he said.

January has been a  crazy time in the NFL, with the Rams moving to L.A, and the possibility of the San Diego Chargers moving to La-La Land as well.

"I highly doubt San Diego will stay put, Tomlinson said.
