Late Sunday into Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Greater Akron, Summit County, and virtually all of Northeast Ohio was left under a blanket of snow courtesy of Winter Storm Izzy that swept across the Midwest and Northeast. 

Locally, it's being reported by the National Weather Service that 13.6 inches of snow fell at the Akron-Canton Airport. For reference, the last time more than a foot of snow accumulated in less than 24 hours at the airport in Green was April 4, 1987, when 19.7 inches fell. Prior to that was December 1, 1974, when 16.4 inches accumulated.

The deadline to nominate your local hero for the annual Acts of Courage Awards hosted by the American Red Cross of Northeast Ohio is rapidly approaching!

What constitutes a hero? Well, an ordinary person who has done, or continues to do, extraordinary things.

Take for example Eric Peterson of Atwater who was driving to work on the morning of March 27, 2018, just like any other day... until it wasn't. He noticed smoke coming from a house in his neighborhood, just a few houses from his. When Peterson didn't see anyone standing outside, he knew there had to be people inside and that they probably needed help. 

That's when he jumped into action and saved the lives of a family he'd never met prior to that day.

Meijer has announced a major hiring wave across Northeast Ohio for three new supercenters opening in late Spring, including in Stow.

According to a press release (below), Meijer is hiring more than 900 employees for the Stow, Mentor, and Avon stores.

(MEIJER) – Meijer has begun hiring more than 900 employees for three northeast Ohio supercenters in Avon, Mentor and Stow. The family-operated retailer announced the first Greater Cleveland stores are expected to open in late spring, expanding its presence after more than 37 years in the Buckeye State.

“Foundations are set, floors are poured, and the walls are up at each of our new Northeast Ohio stores, so every day we’re a little bit closer to opening our first three locations in Greater Cleveland,” Regional Vice President Tom Wilson said. “The opportunity to begin hiring for hourly positions and put together customer-focused teams is the next step in bringing our new neighbors a one-stop shopping solution. We look forward to hiring local team members who can be our future store leaders as we continue to grow in Northeast Ohio.”

Known for pioneering the supercenter concept back in 1962, the family-operated company opened its first supercenter in the state of Ohio just outside of Columbus in 1981. The retailer was the first to provide a unique offering that featured fresh produce, meat and dairy as well as a wide selection of general merchandise and customer-focused services. The retailer currently employs about 10,000 team members at 39 supercenters throughout the state of Ohio and a distribution center in Tipp City.  

The full- and part-time positions available include team leaders, cashiers, cake decorators, customer service, receiving clerks and meat cutters. Ideal candidates will possess a desire to provide exceptional customer service and potentially advance their career within Meijer. The retailer offers a generous benefits package to eligible team members, including paid time off, weekly pay, flexible scheduling, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and health coverage options. The starting hourly wage varies depending on experience level and specific skills.

The new supercenters in Avon, Mentor and Stow will feature fresh produce, meat and dairy delivered seven days a week, as well as apparel departments, pet supplies, toys, electronics, and a garden center. The Avon store will also feature a gas station, which will open approximately one month before the store.

In addition to traditional grocery and merchandise offerings, the stores will also have a pharmacy that features a free prescription program, as well as access to clinical services and immunizations designed to promote family health.

Meijer has a strong family and corporate tradition of caring, including significant support of hunger relief and good will initiatives in the communities it serves. For example, Meijer recently provided free horse-drawn carriage rides around Cleveland’s Public Square as part of the city’s downtown Winterfest, and made the holidays a bit brighter by providing hundreds of in-patient children at Cleveland Clinic Children’s and University Hospitals’ Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

The retailer gives more than 6 percent of its net profit to charitable organizations each year, and each of its stores supports a food bank through its food rescue program. Huntington Bank is closing 70 branches across the nation, including 30 in Ohio, several around Akron.

No word yet on when or how many employees will be affected.

Update from the Red Cross Northeast Ohio Division: 

The American Red Cross is preparing to assist up to 100,000 people in North and South Carolina and Virginia as Hurricane Florence nears the east coast.

More than 1,600 people spent the night Tuesday in 36 Red Cross and community shelters in South Carolina and North Carolina.

More than 1,500 Red Cross disaster workers are on the ground, including 16 from Northeast Ohio. 14 of the Northeast Ohio workers are volunteers. Most are shelter workers.

Additional Red Cross volunteers from Northeast Ohio are standing by, waiting to be assigned to the disaster relief operation.

Northeast Ohio American Red Cross volunteers are heading to North Carolina ahead of what could be one of the most devastating storms to ever hit the Carolinas.

As of Tuesday morning, Hurricane Florence was a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of up to 130 miles per hour, with gusts registering up to 140 mph. 

The National Hurricane Center out of Miami has issued Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches Tuesday for the entire East Coast of the Unitest States, as Florence continues on a crash course with North Carolina. The storm is expected to make landfall, as a Category 4 Hurricane some time Thursday night into Friday morning. More than 1,000,000 residents of the East Coast have been told to evacuate. 

Meanwhile, relief efforts are ramping up. Jim McIntyre with the American Red Cross, Northeast Ohio Region, tells our WAKR Newsroom that a group of 9 volunteers are on their way, as of Tuesday afternoon, to North Carolina. "Most volunteers are told to be prepared to be deployed for up to two weeks," McIntyre said, "in order to help provide continuity for the residents who are displaced and may have to hunker down in a shelter." 

As with any storm or natural disaster, a lot of uncertainty as to the exact path Florence will take, but McIntyre says that's what the Red Cross prepares for: "What we're trying to is to be prepared for any eventuality; and our volunteers are trained to be flexible, to fulfill the mission they've signed up for, but also to know that they may be called to do something that they didn't sign up to do."
