This week's 1590 WAKR male Student Athlete of the Week is Zane Patterson from Woodridge High School.

Zane is a three-sport athlete for the Bulldogs, and with it being the spring sports season, he is currently on the baseball team. He is known for his skills on the pitcher's mound, but also plays first base when he is not pitching. However, Mother Nature has not been too kind to baseball teams in Northeast Ohio, and many teams have not been able to get on the field much.

Outside of baseball, Zane is also a member of the golf and bowling teams at Woodridge.

Patterson is all set as far as college goes, as he will be attending The Ohio State University to study economics. For the remainder of high school, he is a member of the National Honors Society and the Academic Challenge team.

Zane is a big Cleveland Indians fan, and his favorite player is Francisco Lindor.

This week our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Kaitlyn Hill, a senior softball player from East Community Learning Center.

She's been a starting pitcher for the Dragons since freshman year, earning three varsity letters.

Her coach Sarah Kramer says Kaitlyn is a leader both on and off the field

“I rely on her to get messages out and just be a role model for the new players that have come out,” Kramer explains.

“She's a 3.9/4/0 student, and she leads by example both on and off the field.”

Kaitlyn is a member of the National Honor Society, a commanding officer in the ROTC, in addition to both participating in bowling and softball for East.

Hill says she enjoys being a part of the Dragons softball team and working with her coaches and teammates, especially some of the younger players.

“Half of these girls are first year players,” Hill explained. “You just have to be patient and work with them a lot, and keep reminding them to have positive attitudes.”

Among some of Hill's honors include being named Akron Beacon Journal Player of the Week and was also a team MVP during her career.

Upon graduation this spring, Hill plans on attending the University of Akron to study accounting.

We wish Kaitlyn the best in all of her future endeavors.

The high court ruled that the process Ohio juries go through when deciding whether or not the death penalty is appropriate, is substantially different from death penalty jury procedures in other states where the US Supreme Court found them unconstitutuional.

AUDIO: Mayor & Council Members On 'Tobacco 21'

Written by

On Monday, Akron City Council announced the age for the sale of tobacco products have been raised from 18 to 21. Originally proposed by Tamiyka Rose, Akron becomes the tenth city in the state of Ohio to become a “Tobacco 21” town.

Akron mayor Dan Horrigan joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to share his thoughts. Though he understands any pushback the city could receive, the mayor feels this is a larger part of the evolution of the culture, and by curbing the use of tobacco, it will help promote a healthier society. Jeff Fusco is a part of city council, and he felt that the lack of availability of the products, based on research, would lessen the amount of teen smoking rates.
