Akron Police say what started as a verbal altercation inside the VE Poetry Cafe at 2539 Romig Road, ended up as a shooting which claimed the life of 17 year old Anthony Elliot, of Cleveland, and injured two adults.

Summit County Medical Examiners officials say after the incident started inside; those involved were escorted outside into the parking lot, and that's where the shooting occurred.

Police say when they arrived on the scene around 9:30 Sunday night; they found the 17 year old, and a 23 year old woman with gunshot wounds.

Elliot was pronounced dead Cleveland Clinic-Akron General Medical Center, and the woman, who is now in stable condition, was treated for non life-threatening wounds.

At around the same time; police say they discovered that a 32 year old man showed up at Summa Health City Hospital with a gunshot wound, that they believe is from that same incident.

At this point, they say it was an "unknown suspect" who shot all three, and now they're asking for tips to help the determine who did it.

**This story has been updated to include the name of the shooting victim, and the name of the location where the shooting occurred.

Akron Police are trying to find out who shot and killed one man, and put another in the hospital, after a shooting outside a bar in the 300 block of East South Street, at Legends Lounge.

It happened about 12:40AM, Saturday morning, and police say that when they arrived they found a 46 year old man shot in the head, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Later, they found out another person had been shot; a 37 year old man, who took himself to the hospital, with what turned out to be non life-threatening wounds.

An investigation is underway, and police are asking for tips.

This week, we have more news about the federal government's efforts to both promote sustainable, energy-efficient technology, and to encourage manufacturing growth and job creation in Northeast Ohio.

To further those goals, the U.S. Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), is investing more than $10 million dollars in a new program called “Manufacturing the New Energy Economy in Appalachia,” and $1.25 million dollars of that money has been directed toto MAGNET, the Ohio Manufacturing Extension Partnership.

We talke about that with Northeast Ohio MAGNET CEO, Ethan Karp.

We also talked to US Senator Sherrod Brown this week, about a major win for Akron; designation through the US Commerce Department as a Regional Technology and Innovation hub, because of its leadership in producing sustainable polymers—the "next generation" of rubber and plastics.

As a result, Akron is in line to get between $20 and $70 million dollars aimed at spurring research, development, and economic development. But that is at least several months away, and exactly how much of that money Akron will get is still unknown.

What is certain though, is that the University of Akron, and the Akron Chamber of Commerce have already gotten a $400 thousand dollar grant that U-A Vice President for Research and Business engagement, Dr. Susan Bausch, tells us will be used to ramp up ongoing sustainable polymer research.

This week, the Biden administration continued its push toward both manufacturing growth, and the widespread expansion of sustainable green energy initiatives, with a nearly $8 billion dollar investment in clean hydrogen.

As part of that push; Ohio is now included in one of seven regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs, and Canton, Ohio is one of the communities where the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub program will get underway over the next few years.

It will take place at the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority, where their CEO, Kirt Conrad  talked to us about how they plan to use the $20 t0 $50 million federal dollars coming their way through the Clean Hydrogen Hub program, as well as a combination of other federal resources such as IRS Tax credits, and funding through the US Department of Transportation.

As you'll hear, SARTA is already powering 21 of their 110 buses with hydrogen fuel cells, which instead of producing toxic greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming and cause illness; they emit environmentally friendly water vapor and droplets.

Author David Giffels, who has written seven books, primarily focused on life and culture in Ohio, is out with book number eight; a new, and deeper look at the '70's era, Akron-based New Wave rock band, DEVO.

As you'll hear in the following interview with WAKR Morning Show Host, Ray Horner, "The Beginning Was the End: Devo in Ohio", was just released this month, and is a new exploration of material he and his co-author, Jade Dellinger, first mined in their 2003 (now out of print), book: "Are We Not Men? We Are Devo!"

In his new book, Giffels explains how the band labored long under the radar in Akron, honing their craft, trying to find places to play their decidedly "noncommercial" music (at least at the time), and really came to an inflection point that sparked a new level of creativity, after the May 4, 1970 National Guard shooting at Kent State that left four students dead, and nine wounded during an anti Vietnam War protest.

Find out how and why that dark moment in US history mattered, mesmerized, and transformed the band most people recognize by the colorful red plastic flowerpots they wore on their heads in the wild and crazy video for their hit song, "Whip It".

If you'd like to see Giffels and Dellinger in person, and have the chance to hear them talk about their new book; you can do so next week.

They're doing.a book launch event at the Akron-Summit County Public Library Main Branch, at 7:00PM on Monday October 24, and they're making a presentation on how the band was influenced by the May 4 shootings, at Kent State University's May 4 Visitors Center, at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, October 24.

Police Investigate Two Shootings In Akron

Akron police say they took a 23 year old man into custody in connection with a shooting at about 4:45PM Wednesday afternoon, near the Stop And Go Mini Mart in the 1200 block of Diagonal Road, which left a 27 year old man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg.

However, though they say it appears the shooting was the result of a prior argument between the men; they say the incident is still under investigation, and they have not actually arrested anyone yet.

Then, at 12:10AM Thursday, they found a 42 year old man with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Rubber City Lounge in the 400 block of N. Main Street.

He was taken to the hospital, and is now in critical condition.

Police say witnesses inside the bar said they heard multiple gunshots, but that police investigators do not know yet who fired them.

Brian Nelson, who is Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro's Chief of Staff, is attending a Polymer-related business trade show in Germany this week, hoping to convince one or more of the many companies attending from all around the world, to move some of their operations to the Akron area.

While this kind of meeting used to be pretty common in the pre-pandemic era; it's kind of a new thing these days, while business is still getting back on track, and people are once again feeling comfortable enough to travel long distances to meet in crowded settings like conferences and trade shows.

Listen now, as I talk to Nelson about the event, and what members of the Akron delegation are hoping to achieve:
