Akron City officials plan to break ground tomorrow (Tuesday, May 16) on what will become the new Fire Station #12.

It will replace the aging, and no longer suitable station now located at 1852 West Market Street, in Akron's Wallhaven neighborhood.

The new station will be near the corner of South Hawkins Avenue and Westgate Circle, with a structure more compatible to the newer and heavier fire trucks that have come into use since the old station was built back in the 1950's, and will be paid for with funding from Issue 4, approved by voters in Akron a few years ago specifically for upgrades to public safety.

A number of city officials will be on hand for the groundbreaking at 11:00 AM, including Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan, Fire Chief Joseph Natko, Akron Deputy Fire Chief Richard Vober, Akron Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Clarence Tucker, Members of Akron City Council, and Station 12 firefighter/medics.
