Two Northwest HS Students Found Dead

Written by

Two Northwest High School students from Jackson Township are dead after what police believe was a weekend murder suicide, or possibly a double-suicide.

The two students, a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were found by the male victim's cousin in a wooded area in the Township Friday evening, around 8:30.

The Northwest Local School District Superintendent Dr. Mike Shreffler says counsellors are on hand on campuses today, adding that social media is not the place to go when looking for an accurate account of what happened.

The students' names haven't been released; the investigation is ongoing.

This Week In Tech with Jeanne Destro 2-23-18 Featured

This week, we'll look at how the internet which brings us together with friends and family on social media--is also helping to tear our society apart, and threaten our very existence.

Sound extreme? Well, from the indictment of 13 Russian nationals charged with interfering with the 2016 Presidential election, to Akron-Canton area teens arrested over the past week for making online threats; social media is being used in ways that its creators never dreamed--and which for many--has become a nightmare.

1590 WAKR Student Athlete of the Week: Kiah Jenkins

Written by
This week, our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Kiah Jenkins, a junior bowler from North High School.

Kiah said she has been bowling from a young age and she’s credited her mother for her interest in the sport.

“Ever since my mom had me walking, she had me throwing a ball down the lane,” she said.

“She taught me specifically how to roll the ball, where I should stand, what each pin was, and she’s played a big role in both bowling and softball and just who I am as a person.”

A two-sport athlete in both bowling and softball, Jenkins keeps busy with athletics and academics, sporting a 3.2 GPA.

A leader both vocally and by example, Kiah says being an encouraging teammate is something she prides herself on.

One of her most memorable highlights was winning the City Championship in bowling for the Vikings recently. It was a nerve racking experience, as they won by three points.

“I almost started to cry,” Jenkins said laughing.

She says her coaches make sure that academics come before athletics and preparing for the future is of the utmost importance.

In her spare time, Kiah enjoys bowling, of course, spending time with family and friends, and running.

We at 1590 WAKR wish Kiah the best in all of her future endeavors.

This week's 1590 WAKR male student athlete is Jonathan Gabriel from Walsh Jesuit High School.

Jonathan is a standout senior hockey player for the Warriors. He has been playing hockey since he was a youngster, and picked up the sport not long after he first tied his skates.

Jonathan is a huge NHL hockey fan, with his favorite team being the Washington Capitals. His favorite player is Alexander Ovechkin, and he watches as many games on television as he can. Jonathan has also been enjoying the Winter Olympics as well, and has been pulling for the United States teams on the ice.

He says he enjoys the close knit community at Walsh. Jonathan believes the students feel welcomed at all times. It has been a fast moving four years, but he says is looking forward to the future.

Jonathan will be attending Kent State University and plans on studying business.

Ellet HS Teen Arrested in Online "Copycat" Threat

Written by

Akron Police have arrested a 16-year-old Ellet High School student after making threats online that referenced the Parkland, Florida shooting that left 17 people dead on Valentines Day.

The student, whose name hasn't been released because he is a juvenile, allegedly posted a message to Snapchat indicating that he was going to "shoot up Ellet High School" and entitled, allegedly, the note "I hate Florida, part 2."

Employees of Ellet High School, who also have parents that attend the school, notified police about the messages.

Lt. Rick Edwards with the Akron Police Department tells the 1590 WAKR newsroom that the student admitted to making the threat on the social media platform.

The boy has been booked in Summit County Jail on the third degree felony charges of making terroristic threats.

Akron Police were notified of another threat that was posted to Facebook referencing a past school shooting and claiming that the author of the post, very specifically, was going to carry out an attack on Firestone High School. The post even reference February 15, as the target date for such an attack. After investigating, it turns out that post was from one year ago and showed up in the caller's Facebook Timeline as a "memory."

Still though, no arrest has been made in reference to that specific threat.
