Put a lid on it! That’s the message from the Ohio Department of Transportation and the American Academy of Pediatrics as they team up to give out helmets this month in recognition of May being Bike Helmet Safety Awareness Month. 

This is the 13th year of helmet distribution, and more than 10,000 helmets are expected to be handed out. Ohio AAP CEO Melissa Wervey Arnold tells 3News that, “Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent and severe brain injury by 88 percent.”

ODOT provided their own tips to keep cyclists safe, saying that motorists need to be aware, telling them to slow down and pay attention, watch for bikes when turning, change lanes to pass, and put your phone away when driving.
