Akron Opens Summit Lake As Cooling Center Today

Written by

The City of Akron is keeping its Summit Lake Community Center (380 W. Crosier St.) open until 7PM today, as a cooling center for residents who don't have air conditioning, and need someplace to beat the heat.

Today's high temperature is expected to be 93, but with the high humidity, the National Weather Service warns that the Heat Index will make it feel more like it is 100-104.

The extreme heat we're experiencing in Akron this week is part of a major heat wave extending across multiple states, and as far North as Maine, where it hasn't been this hot in decades.

Akron officials say they aren't sure yet whether the Summit Lake Community Center will be open extra hours tomorrow or not, because it is a National holiday (Juneteenth).

We'll keep you posted as we hear more.
