Long before the pandemic started taking lives in Ohio, there was another epidemic that took our friends, relatives, and co-workers. The Opiod epidemic may have receded a bit in the headlines, but it isn't over, and is still taking a heavy toll in our communities statewide.

Jeanne Destro talked to three people working to help those struggling with drug, alcohol, and mental health issues.

First, a conversation with Orman Hall, who is an Executive in Residence with the Ohio University College of Health Sciences and Professions.

Hall worked on a study released this month, that shows a massive increase in "deaths of despair", from drugs, alcohol, and suicide between 2009 and 2019.

Why did it happen? Who was most affected? What can we do about it? Listen here to find out.

Next, we talked to Gerald Craig, who is the Executive Director of the Summit County ADM Board, about how what came up in that study relates to our area, and how the pandemic is putting even more stress on people dealing with those issues.

And finally, we talked to Michael J. Evans, who is with the Summit County Community Partnershp, about this week's Virtual Community Drug Prevention Celebration, and thier efforts to encourage people to safely dispose of prescription drugs.

It's been a rough road for Akron Metro RTA, as the pandemic has reduced ridership by 60%.

Still though, Metro RTA CEO, Dawn Distler, tells Jeanne Destro that they're maintaining service, and they haven't had any layoffs.

Find out how they're trying to increase bus ridership and public confidence, as more people work from home, and others shy away from sharing rides in close quarters.

The mayor of Akron joins WAKR once a week or so to touch on the various issues and questions facing the citizens. One of those questions, with a big election coming up, is the need for extra security at the polls.

Dan Horrigan assured the listeners there won’t be any problems for voters on and before election, as mentioned on the Ray Horner Morning Show. Though he personally is not on the ballot this year, a few charter amendments will be, which he discussed in depth in the interview.

The mayor also mentioned how some projects and quality-of-life areas were scaled back in 2020, the cost of city services, and working with the state government for additional stimulus.

COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are up across the board, from the counties and communities in the state of Ohio throughout the rest of the United States. In fact, a record 216 hospitalizations occurred in one day in Ohio, the highest since the pandemic began.

Jim Krasula of CBS News has followed the coronavirus pandemic since the get-go, and he joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to give a national look at this new spread. Krasula believes the factors for the increase range from formal to informal gatherings to people letting their guards down. He mentioned Dr. Anthony Fauci’s suggestion of virtual options for the holidays this year.

The award-winning CBS News correspondent also talked about the continued travel restrictions in some areas, and the possibility of another lockdown.
